Why this lesson exists
The desktop-teaching project starts with installation and one practical action. You do not need to learn an API or compare every model before using an assistant well.

Start in the browser
Open chatgpt.com and sign in. Use a chat for a small question or writing exercise. Paste the fictional note in the example below; do not start by connecting every account.
Try the desktop app if useful
Follow the official quickstart linked below for your operating system, install from its official download and sign in. Choose the project or folder deliberately; the selected files provide work context.
Choose the mode for the job
Use conversational chat to explore an idea. For a finished research or document task use the available work mode. For a codebase task select Codex and a disposable practice folder. Names and availability can vary by account; consult the current quickstart.
Give one bounded task
Ask Codex to create a simple HTML checklist using fictional items, explain changed files and open a local preview. Review what it changed before publishing or connecting external services.

Replace the bracketed parts with your own practice details.
In this empty practice folder, create a single HTML checklist with three fictional study tasks. No accounts, network requests or paid services. Explain the files, show a local preview, and help me test checking and unchecking items. Do not publish it.
What this looks like
First chat exercise: “From this note, list actions and unknowns: Maya will draft the outline; Lee will review it; the deadline is undecided.” Check that the assistant does not invent a date.
Check your result
Use evidence from your output. A confident explanation from the AI is not enough.
- You know whether you are chatting or changing project files.
- The practice folder contains only intended files.
- You opened and tested the result yourself.
